Centre Gallery’s “So You Think You Can Paint?” Exhibition
Tampa, FL (January 25, 2010) – The Centre Gallery at the University of South Florida hosted the So You Think You Can Paint reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, January 22, 2010. “It was overwhelming successful in the most positive way,” said Vincent Kral, exhibition host and chief preparator at the Contemporary Art Museum Institute for Research in Art.
The idea that stemmed from a reality show turned into a hit. With 139 contestants and close to 200 paintings, the So You Think You Can Paint exhibition attracted artists and audiences from all over the Tampa Bay area.
“I was excited and surprised to see how many people showed up. A lot of work into it, so I’m pleased with how successful it was,” said Sabrina Hughes, director of operations for the Centre Gallery. Nearly 300 guests attended the reception and awards presentation Friday evening.
Beginning from January 11 until January 21, the Centre Gallery accepted painting submissions of any subject, size or format. Each contestant was assigned a number that coordinated with their artwork. Paintings were then judged and selected to be hung on the walls of the gallery.
The So You Think You Can Paint reception and awards presentation allowed participants and members of the community to meet other artists, view the artwork that had been hung, and see if their painting had been selected for the show.
AOE sponsored the exhibition and provided art-related prizes to contestants who were chosen for an award. Among the honors of the evening were best in show, best take on art historical style, best landscape, most photorealistic, move to N.Y. award and more.
Guests were also given the opportunity to vote on their favorite painting in the gallery. “The best moment of the evening was giving away the viewer’s choice award,” said Gabrielle Hairabedian, director of artist relations and announcer during the awards presentation. The fan favorite, Heather Mahoney, received this honor. “” said Mahoney, USF senior majoring in .
Eric Onoina received the honor of best in show. “I submitted because I needed to get my work out there,” said Onoina, who heard about the exhibition from a friend who attended USF. “I was really, really surprised because there was a lot of good work in the show,” he said. Onoina has been painting for about five years.
